Health Canada has received a notice from the Medicines Act that it will not sell or grant licences for the sale of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra to patients under 18. The Notice states that the drug’s label does not include the possibility of a licence for its use for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). Pfizer Canada is unable to grant the licence for the drug until its patent has expired, but the patent could also expire in the near future.
The Medicines Act notice states that it is currently in the process of reviewing the status of the patent for the drug. This means Pfizer Canada may no longer be able to sell or grant its licence to other pharmaceutical companies, and is reviewing the matter. Health Canada is continuing to investigate the matter, but is unable to comment.
The drug’s label is available from Health Canada’s website, where it states: “Sildenafil citrate, an oral drug for the treatment of male sexual function disorder, is indicated for use as a phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitor.”
The FDA has received requests from patients who have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction (ED) and has been prescribed a prescription medication to help their condition.
The drug is currently marketed as a generic equivalent of Viagra® to treat erectile dysfunction, but has no FDA approval for the treatment of ED. The FDA has also received a request from individuals with erectile dysfunction to sell their drugs without a prescription.
If the medication is marketed as a generic, it will only be sold in Canada, which is not covered by the FDA’s licence and is not permitted by Health Canada. It will only be sold under the supervision of a licensed physician and will not be subject to the same scrutiny as any other drug.
If the drug is marketed as a generic, it will only be sold in Canada, which is not covered by Health Canada’s licence and is not permitted by Health Canada.
Health Canada has received notice that it is not selling or grant licences for the treatment of ED. Health Canada does not currently sell or grant licences for the treatment of ED, but the pharmaceutical industry is permitted to sell its drug without restrictions, including that of the licence holder.
The Drug and Cosmetics Act, which allows private companies to manufacture and distribute controlled substances and prescription medicines, provides for competition in the drug market. Health Canada has received several reports of adverse reactions in patients, which has resulted in fines and penalties. Some of these adverse reactions are serious enough to require a license for the product.
The Health Canada notice states that there is no guarantee that these adverse reactions will not occur again, and that there is no way for Health Canada to know if the drug has been discontinued or whether it is still effective.
The FDA is aware of these risks. However, it has not yet determined whether they are related to the drug or whether they are due to other factors or to other drug interactions.
The FDA is also unable to comment on the safety or side effects of the drug, although it will certainly be subject to appropriate scrutiny.
Health Canada is still continuing to investigate the matter and will continue to take necessary steps to ensure that the drug remains safe for use in Canada and that any adverse reactions reported to Health Canada are not accidental.

The FDA is aware of the potential risks and is taking necessary steps to ensure that it remains a safe and effective medication for patients.
The pharmaceutical industry has made efforts to reduce the risk of adverse reactions to its products, including by encouraging competition. But with the current pandemic and the impact of COVID-19, the availability of medicines for people with ED and erectile dysfunction is limited and more needs to be done to mitigate risks to patients.
As of May 10, the Canadian Food and Drug Administration (CARD) will only issue a licence to sell the drug, but the FDA has not yet issued a licence for the drug. The drug is available to use in the United States and other countries.
The FDA has received multiple reports of adverse effects and safety concerns in patients who have been prescribed the drug, but is still awaiting a licence from the manufacturer.
Health Canada has not yet issued a licence for the drug.
